Ants are the number one household pest in the United States.  Around the Metroplex the problems they cause varies from being a health hazard, to causing expenses to replacing food they contaminate and for repairing electrical equipment that they may short out, to interfering with real estate transactions.

Ant Description

bulletCarpenter Ants are most easily describes as "a big ant".  They come in a number of color patterns but the most common will have a rusty red front half and the back part being black. Carpenter ants are considered a wood destroying insect, but the common species in North Texas is more inclined to find an existing hollow area rather than make one themselves.  Commonly found in the hollow tubing of outdoor screens or storm windows or hollow core doors such as closet and bedroom doors inside.  A number of other ants will set up residence inside structure and all too often we hear stories of people paying past companies big money, to take care of the dreaded wood destroying insect only to discover that they were not carpenter ants to begin with.   For other views on carpenter ants around the country try United's site from the New Jersey area or in the North West part of the country The Art of Exterminating.

bulletFire Ants are found in the soil.  Their mounds have no distinct shape other than dirt pushed up from the soil.  Unfortunately there need not be a visible mound to indicate that an active nest exists.  They can also move into the soil around the bath trap, creating a colony inside the house.

bulletVarious House Ants can routinely be problems around the home.    One of the more common is the Odorous House Ant.  It's a small dark ant that has an odor when crushed.  Pharaoh Ants are best described as tiny ants, having a reddish tint.
